Instructions:
- Lightly brush the bread with olive oil or softened butter.
- Layer the provolone or mozzarella on the bottom slice of bread.
- Add the sliced tomatoes, prosciutto or salami, and fresh basil or arugula.
- Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if desired.
- Top with the remaining slice of bread.
- Toast in a skillet or panini press until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
- Slice and serve warm.
Variations
- Use mortadella, capicola, or roasted turkey for different flavor profiles.
- Replace basil with pesto for a more intense herbaceous note.
- Add roasted red peppers for extra sweetness and depth.
- Use ciabatta or focaccia for a sturdier, more rustic sandwich base.
Tips
- Press lightly while toasting to ensure even melting and crisping.
- For a garlic-forward flavor, brush the bread with garlic butter before toasting.
- If using fresh mozzarella, pat it dry to prevent the sandwich from becoming soggy.
- A drizzle of balsamic glaze inside adds a sweet, tangy finish that complements the salty meats beautifully.
