Tennessee Onions Bake (Better Than Onion Rings!)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel the onions and slice them into ¼-inch-thick rounds. Gently separate them, keeping the rings mostly intact.
  3. Grease a baking dish and layer the onion slices evenly across the bottom.
  4. In a bowl, combine the cheddar, mozzarella (or Monterey Jack), and Parmesan cheeses.
  5. Sprinkle the cheese mixture generously over the onions.
  6. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top.
  7. Season with garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and dried herbs.
  8. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake an additional 15 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown on top.
  10. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Variations

  • Add sliced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Use Gruyère or Swiss cheese for a deeper, nuttier flavor.
  • Sprinkle buttered breadcrumbs on top for extra crunch.
  • Add a pinch of smoked paprika for subtle smokiness.

Tips

  • Sweet onions work best; avoid sharp yellow onions if possible.
  • Slice onions evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  • Let the dish rest briefly so the cheese sets before serving.
  • This dish reheats well and tastes even better the next day.
