Cherry Jalapeño Sweet-Heat Spread

Instructions:

  1. Add the cherries, jalapeños, sugar, honey, lemon juice, vinegar, and salt to a saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally until the cherries soften and release their juices.
  3. Lightly mash the cherries to your preferred texture.
  4. Simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until the mixture thickens slightly.
  5. For a firmer spread, stir in the cornstarch slurry and simmer for 1–2 minutes more.
  6. Let the mixture cool completely — it will thicken further as it cools.
  7. Store in jars in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Variations

  • Add a splash of bourbon while simmering for smoky depth.
  • Stir in a pinch of cinnamon for warmth.
  • Replace jalapeños with serranos for extra heat.
  • Add grated orange zest for a citrusy twist.

Tips

  • Taste before simmering and adjust sweetness or acidity as needed.
  • For a smoother spread, blend briefly with an immersion blender.
  • Use gloves when handling jalapeños to avoid irritation.
  • Serve over cream cheese with crackers, glaze chicken or pork, or spread onto burgers or panini.
