Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, diced onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Shape the mixture into thick patties and sear them in a skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides. They do not need to be fully cooked.
- Arrange the browned patties evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, heavy cream, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour the gravy mixture over the patties.
- Top each patty generously with shredded cheese.
- Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is bubbling.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
Variations
- Add sliced mushrooms directly to the gravy for an earthier flavor.
- Swap mozzarella for Swiss or provolone for a different cheese profile.
- Mix ground beef with ground pork for a richer, juicier patty.
- For added depth, caramelize the onions before mixing them into the patties.
Tips
- Browning the patties first enhances both flavor and texture, but avoid cooking them fully—they’ll finish in the oven.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, reduce the beef broth to 3/4 cup.
- Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the gravy to thicken slightly.
- This bake reheats beautifully, making it great for meal prep or leftovers.
